How to Play Music in a Zoom Meeting (Without Sharing Your Screen)

February 23, 20262 min read

Zoom includes a built-in feature that allows you to stream music directly from your computer so participants hear clear, uninterrupted sound — even when no one is speaking.

This method is ideal for:

  • Playing soft meditation music from Spotify, YouTube, iTunes, etc.

  • Preventing music from fading in and out

  • Speaking over the music during guided meditations

Before Your Meeting (Recommended Setup)

To ensure the best audio quality, adjust these Zoom settings ahead of time:

  1. Open Zoom and go to Settings > Audio

  2. Scroll down and enable:

    • Show in-meeting option to “Enable Original Sound”

    • High fidelity music mode

    • (Optional) Disable echo cancellation

These settings help preserve the clarity and fullness of the music.

During Your Meeting: Sharing Computer Audio Only

  1. Open your music app (Spotify, YouTube, etc.) and have your track ready
    (Do not press play yet.)

  2. In Zoom, click the green Share Screen button

  3. In the window that opens, select the Advanced tab at the top

  4. Choose Computer Audio (sometimes labeled “Music or Computer Sound Only”)

  5. Click Share

You are now sharing only your computer’s audio — not your screen.

Once sharing has started, return to your music app and press play. The music will stream directly to all participants.

Speaking Over the Music

You can speak normally while the music plays.

Zoom treats your microphone and your shared computer audio as separate streams. This allows your voice to remain clear without lowering or interrupting the music.

To ensure this works properly:

  • Look in the top-left corner of your Zoom window

  • If you see “Original Sound for Musicians: Off”, click it to turn it ON

Enabling Original Sound helps prevent Zoom from compressing or adjusting the music.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use headphones to prevent your microphone from picking up the music and causing echo

  • Keep the music at a soft, supportive level so it doesn’t overpower your voice

  • Do a quick sound check before your session if possible

What Participants Will Hear

When set up correctly, participants will experience:

  • Smooth, consistent background music

  • Clear, uninterrupted voice guidance

  • No choppy audio or volume drop during silent moments

Final Thoughts

Using Zoom’s “Computer Audio” sharing feature allows you to create a seamless and professional experience for your attendees. Whether you’re guiding meditation, offering Reiki, or holding space in silence, this method ensures your music supports the session without interruption.

With a few simple settings adjusted in advance, you can confidently integrate background music into your offerings and maintain a calm, uninterrupted flow throughout your event.
